NOTES

S. F. Tuttle, P. O. Fish Creek, son of David and Lucinda Tuttle, was born in Marion Co., Ia, July 21, 1848, and remained in said county and State until 1863, with parents.

He removed to Colorado that year, and thence to California, where he remained six months. In 1864 he came to Montana and located at Alder Gulch, where he engaged in placer mining. In 1868 he removed to Fish Creek, where he settled with his father. In 1868 he went to Butte city, where he engaged in mining until 1870, when he returned to the old homestead, and remained there during the winters of 1871-72. Taking another trip to California he stayed six months, and again returned home to Fish Creek, where he remained until after his marriage in 1873.

In 1874 he went to Little Pipestone, where he again engaged in mining, clearing on an average seven dollars per day; but was not long in this place before he had to remove his wife and family to a place of safety on account of the Indians, who were then raiding the country. He therefore returned to Fish Creek, but a year afterward he again went to Pipestone and worked there until the spring of 1877. The diggings were rich then at Pipestone.

In 1877 he bought his father's homestead, where he has since remained, engaging in farming and stock raising. Mr. T. owns 141 acres of deeded land, and 359 acres desert claim; is now gardening to a considerable extent. He grows cabbage, peas, beans, turnips, strawberries, gooseberries, currants, etc., in abundance. Mr. Tuttle, in company with two brothers, owns about 500 head of cattle and fifty head of horses. He believes stock raising to be the most profitable business in this country. He says when he first came to this country in 1864 many began to raise potatoes and other vegetables most successfully. This led to other branches of farming, which has proved to be one of the most successful industries in the Territory.

Mr. S. F. Tuttle was married to Miss D. J. Butts, March 16, 1873. Mrs. Tuttle, daughter of Jones and Luana Butts, was born in Newton County, Mo., January 12, 1855; removed to Montana Territory in 1866, and was educated in Helena at the public schools. Mr. and Mrs. T. are both members of the M.E. church. They have four children living, three boys and one girl.
